It is a year-round circuit – roughly 1.5 million wildebeest and 200,000 zebras following the seasonal rains across the Serengeti and into Kenya’s Masai Mara in a clockwise loop that takes 12 months to complete. The calving season in the southern Serengeti (January-February) when 8,000 calves are born daily. The river crossings at the Mara River (July-October) where crocodiles wait at crossing points. Each moment in the cycle is different, and the right timing requires knowing what you want to see.
Tanzania is also the country with Ngorongoro Crater – a 100-square-mile volcanic caldera containing the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa – and Kilimanjaro, at 19,341 feet the highest free-standing mountain on earth. And then, three hours by ferry or 20 minutes by plane, there is Zanzibar: an Indian Ocean archipelago with a 16th-century Omani stone city at its center and water that turns the same impossible blue as Bora Bora.

Getting Started

Begin planning your customized trip today. Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR) is the primary international gateway; Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) handles direct access to the northern circuit. Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) receives flights from Dar es Salaam and Nairobi.

The northern circuit – Arusha, Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Ngorongoro – covers the primary wildlife destinations in a 5-7 day loop. All safaris are guided (national park regulations require it), and the quality of the guide determines the quality of the experience.

Travel Offerings

Luxury Safari & Wildlife Expeditions

Custom Private Travel

Kilimanjaro Trekking

Coastal & Island Travel (Zanzibar)

Cultural & Maasai Heritage Experiences

Small Group Travel

       Contact Us Today

   Travel Guide

    Resources
    Things To Do
    LGBT+ Info
    Best Times to Visit
       Resources

U.S. citizens need a valid passport and a tourist visa – available on arrival at Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam airports ($50 USD), or apply in advance via the Tanzania e-visa portal (evisa.go.tz).

Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country.

Currency is TZS (Tanzanian Shilling); USD is widely accepted on safari and in tourist areas.

Safari vehicles are 4WD with pop-top roofs for photography.

Tipping for guides, trackers, and camp staff is standard and expected – $15-25/person/day for the guide is a baseline.

       Things To Do

Ngorongoro Crater: a full day descending into the 100-square-mile caldera is the single most reliable wildlife experience in Africa. The crater floor contains permanently resident populations of lions, elephants, Cape buffalo, black rhinoceros (critically endangered; approximately 26 remain in the crater), hippopotamuses, and flamingo concentrations on the soda lake. The Black Rhino specifically – one of fewer than 5,000 remaining in the wild globally – is most reliably seen here.

The Serengeti: the great plains extend 5,700 square miles; positioning within the park depends on migration timing. The central Seronera region is reliable year-round for big cats. River crossings at the Mara River in July-October require positioning along the river bank for several hours and patience – the wildebeest can be read by their behavior before they commit.

Tarangire National Park is significantly less visited than the Serengeti and Ngorongoro and has the highest concentration of elephants in Tanzania outside Amboseli.

Zanzibar’s Stone Town: the labyrinthine 16th-century Omani trading port, UNESCO-listed, with the Slave Market memorial and the House of Wonders at its center.

       LGBT+ Info

LGBTQ+ travelers must utilize extreme discretion in all public settings. Same-sex relationships are criminalized in Tanzania (including Zanzibar) under the Penal Code, with penalties of up to 30 years in prison. Enforcement is real and not merely theoretical – there have been documented cases of arrest and prosecution.

Tanzania is not recommended for travelers unwilling to be completely invisible regarding LGBTQ+ identity. The safari and wildlife experiences are extraordinary; the legal and social environment requires honest acknowledgment and planning accordingly.

       Best Times to Visit

The dry season (June-October) is the optimal window for wildlife viewing across all parks – vegetation thins, animals concentrate around water, and the Mara River crossings occur.

July-August is peak season; advance camp booking 6-12 months ahead is required for the prime Mara crossing camps. The calving season (January-February) in the southern Serengeti (Ndutu area) is equally compelling and significantly less expensive than the summer peak.

The long rains (March-May) reduce access to some camps; the short rains (November-December) are brief and generally manageable. Zanzibar: June-October and December-February are the best months.

7-Day Itinerary

Northern Tanzania Circuit & Zanzibar – 7 Days

Day 1 – Arrive Kilimanjaro / Arusha

Fly into JRO (via Amsterdam, London, Doha, or Nairobi). Transfer to Arusha. Afternoon at leisure – the Cultural Heritage Centre in Arusha has a good Tanzanian art and Maasai artifact collection. Briefing with your guide on the circuit ahead.

Day 2 – Tarangire National Park

Two-hour drive south to Tarangire. Full day game drive – the Tarangire River in the dry season concentrates elephant herds of 100-300 animals. The baobab tree density here is unlike anywhere else in the northern circuit. Lion prides and leopards are resident. Return to Arusha or overnight in Tarangire.

Day 3 – Ngorongoro Crater

Drive west to the crater rim (2.5 hours from Arusha). Descend into the crater for a full day – the 2,000-foot descent takes 20 minutes by 4WD. Crater floor game drive: black rhino tracking, lion prides, hippopotamus pools, flamingo lagoons, Cape buffalo herds. Ascend by late afternoon. Overnight on the rim for the crater view at sunrise.

Day 4 – Serengeti: Central

Drive west into the Serengeti (3 hours from the crater). Game drive en route through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive Seronera by midday – the central Serengeti’s cheetah population is the most reliably viewable in Africa. Afternoon and evening drives.

Day 5 – Serengeti: Migration Position

Positioning game drive depending on migration timing. July-October: north to the Mara River region for crossing potential – position early and wait. January-February: south to Ndutu for calving season – predator-prey interactions are constant. Full day in the field.

Day 6 – Fly to Zanzibar

Charter flight from Serengeti airstrip to Zanzibar (1-2 hours depending on routing). Stone Town in the afternoon: the narrow alleyways of the Omani medina, the Slave Market memorial (the Anglican Cathedral sits on the site of the last open slave market in East Africa, abolished in 1873), and the seafront.

Day 7 – Zanzibar / Depart

Morning: Spice Farm tour north of Stone Town (30 minutes) – cloves, vanilla, cinnamon, and black pepper growing in a working farm. The spice trade made Zanzibar one of the wealthiest ports in the Indian Ocean in the 19th century; the farms provide context for the island’s history. Afternoon at Nungwi Beach (north tip) or Paje Beach (east coast) – the Indian Ocean water in Zanzibar is specifically warm and calm on the west side, specifically clear on the east. Fly home from ZNZ via Dar es Salaam or Nairobi.

   Travel Insights

At a Glance Travel Guide Sample Itinerary Insights Tanzania luxury safari begins with understanding that the Great Migration is not […]

["post-7264","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
